The Trans Mountain Pipeline was established in October 1953 to create a reliable energy supply for Canada and the United States. The initial capacity was 150,000 barrels per day with four pump stations along the line and a marine loading dock. Since 1953, the pipeline’s capacity has been increased a number of times by twinning parts of the line and adding associated facilities. Today, the Trans Mountain pipeline carries approximately 300,000 barrels per day through 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta and British Columbia, and 111 kilometres of pipeline in Washington state and operates the Westridge Marine Terminal facility.
