December 22, 2025 — How green is the Port of Long Beach’s Maintenance Facility? So green it recently captured first place in the National Association of Fleet Administrators’ 2025 Green Garage Contest for its industry-leading environmental practices.

“This award demonstrates our commitment to the Port’s long legacy of forward-thinking policies that promote the health and well-being of our community and our industry,” said Maintenance Director Fred Greco. “We are proud to be leading the way towards a greener future for all.”

“The Port’s effort towards this achievement started over 20 years ago with the adoption of the Green Port Policy and continues to this day,” said Fleet Services Manager Ryan Van Andel. “This Green Garage Award acknowledges our organizational culture and staff commitment to a common vision for a more sustainable future.”

Announced in early December, the Green Garage Award recognizes excellence in facility maintenance, recycling, procurement, innovation and community outreach. The Port won the top prize for its numerous sustainable practices, including use of environmentally friendly automotive products, non-aerosol cleaning agents, reusable and recyclable oil filtration systems for eligible vehicles, closed-loop part washing equipment that conserves water, and active efforts to reduce reliance on paper by using digital orders for vehicle maintenance. The Port also clinched the No. 1 ranking for its strong spill prevention program, whose controls include secondary containment systems.

Working with the Port’s Human Resources and Environmental Planning divisions, the Maintenance team conducts regular sustainability and safety training programs to ensure best practices in pollution prevention, energy conservation and waste management. The Port also fosters a culture of continuous improvement through employee recognition programs that encourage and acknowledge sustainability ideas from front-line workers.

Opened in 2014, the Port’s Maintenance Facility has gold certification for being built to the highest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards for sustainable design, construction and use. The building’s advanced energy-efficient features include a large rooftop solar array, radiant heating and cooling slabs, faucet aerators, construction that maximizes the use of daylight, and sensor-equipped LED lighting.

The Port operates a green fleet comprising 47 electric vehicles and 54 hybrids supported by more than 50 electric vehicle charging stations and two portable solar charging stations. The Port showcases its green fleet at community and Port-sponsored events throughout the year, with multiple appearances in 2025 during the yearlong 20th anniversary celebration of the Port’s landmark Green Port Policy.
