September 4, 2025 — The Ministry of the Navy, as the National Maritime Authority, through the Unit of Port Captaincies and Maritime Affairs (UNICAPAM), held the “First Pilot National Demonstration Event-Mexico Test Biofouling” in coordination with the Sixth Naval Region and the Administration of the National Port System (ASIPONA) of Manzanillo.
The event took place from August 27 to 28, 2025, attended by Haniel Ascencio Estrada on behalf of ASIPONA Puerto Vallarta.
Important aspects of the problems associated with biofouling adhered to ships’ hulls, the risks of transfers of invasive aquatic species and the different types of ecological technologies for the protection of marine biodiversity were addressed.
This pilot event included a workshop course of active participation with biofouling identification activities depending on the type of cruise ships or ships, in the same way a Remote Operation Vehicle (ROV) was practiced in the handling, which demonstrated an inspection of the hull of a vessel docked in the port.
As a result, training was obtained that involves the relevant knowledge and tools in environmental legislation to carry out possible inspections of biofouling cleanups of cruise ships in the port. In order to reduce the CO2 derived from the cleaning of biofouling.
ASIPONA Puerto Vallarta is committed to training as a tool to achieve excellence and be a port of the vanguard port.
