November 24, 2025 — The growth of the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas in cargo handling is reflected in its more than 24.6 million tons processed as of the end of October 2025.
This outstanding performance and dynamism position the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas as one of Mexico’s main logistics hubs. This is reflected in its robust cargo operations, comprised of 63% imports, 27% exports, and 10% coastal shipping. Cargo volume by type remained at 48% containerized, followed by 32% mineral bulk cargo, and the remaining 20% comprised of automotive cargo, general cargo, agricultural bulk, fluids, and petroleum products.
Containerized Cargo
Containerized cargo operations at the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas totaled 2,161,847 containers, reflecting a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This performance is attributed to the port’s extensive infrastructure and skilled workforce, which allows for container operations to be comprised of 29% imports, 28% exports, and 43% transshipment. 75% of the containers were transported by road and 25% by rail.
Automotive Cargo
Automotive handling at specialized terminals saw a 7% increase in vehicles compared to the previous year, totaling 617,693 units by the end of October.
The volume of automotive traffic in Mexico through the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas reflects the strong confidence of manufacturers and the importance of its infrastructure. Imports account for the largest share of traffic at 72%, followed by exports at 26%, and transshipment at 2%.
Vessel Operations at the Port
The significant volume of cargo movement at the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas demonstrates its infrastructure for handling the latest generation of vessels. As of the end of October, over 1,493 vessels had been handled, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.
