September 12, 2024 — Through collaborative research with Clear Seas, a program supporter, Green Marine has identified performance indicators with a direct or indirect link to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This exercise provides new awareness and means to convey what Green Marine’s participants are doing to address the environmental matters that the U.N. has identified as urgent for planetary well-being.
The research project’s final report, “Mapping Canadian Maritime Industry Initiatives to UN Sustainable Development Goals,” was published by Clear Seas on September 12. It reveals that although the SDGs do not specifically target the maritime industry, many maritime organizations are already contributing to these goals. Clear Seas’ analysis compared publicly available sustainability reporting and metrics with the SDGs, providing a framework to further align future initiatives with these goals.
Performance indicators correlation with the SDGs
Green Marine’s newest performance indicator, Aquatic Ecosystems, which applies to ports, has the greatest correlation with SDGs with 16 targets from 9 different SDGs that are linked to the various criteria of the indicator. The Air emissions – Greenhouse gases performance indicator is the second one with the greatest correlation with a total of 13 targets from 10 different SDGs linked to this indicator.
