October 14, 2024 — Exciting developments are underway at the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf! If you’ve been near the waterfront, you may have noticed a unique vessel docked at B Berth. This is the Seaspan Garibaldi the first vessel developed by a Canadian company that will provide ship to ship liquid natural gas (LNG) bunkering solutions. LNG bunkering is a flexible and efficient way to fuel ships, helping to reduce emissions and support cleaner marine operations.
The Garibaldi will take first cargo and finalize commissioning in Vancouver before its first ship-to-ship bunkering in Long Beach, where Seaspan will provide Simultaneous Operations to bunker a series of vessels.
Following its first bunkering, the Seaspan Garibaldi will continue to provide low-carbon solutions to vessels on the West Coast of North America and will soon be joined by Seaspan Energy’s second LNG bunkering vessel, the Seaspan Lions (Ch’ich’iyúy Elxwíkn).
The Port of Nanaimo is proud to support their community partners at Seaspan ULC in this initiative. Offering more sustainable refueling options is a key step to a cleaner future for the maritime industry.
