Port of San Diego recognized for Environmental Leadership and Excellence with Green Marine Certification

June 27, 2025 — The Port of San Diego has been recertified by Green Marine, an international voluntary environmental certification program for the maritime industry. The Port first enrolled in Green Marine in 2018 and has achieved annual certification since. This recertification covers calendar year 2024.

“We are proud to be certified again as part of the Green Marine program,” said Chair Danielle Moore, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “This recertification not only validates our commitment to continuous improvement in environmental sustainability, but it also demonstrates the Port’s consistent leadership and innovation in green maritime operations.”

To earn recertification, the Port participated in a rigorous evaluation of its environmental initiatives. This includes an annual self-evaluation and meeting with a third-party verifier every two years. Verification includes interviews, site visits, and reviews of project and program documentation to support reported scores.

The Port was evaluated for reducing greenhouse gas and air pollutants, spill prevention and stormwater management, reducing impact of port activities on nearby communities, environmental leadership, community relations, waste management, and underwater noise management.

Performance Report

Overall, the Port achieved Level 5 for five out of the eight performance indicators evaluated including Community Impacts, Community Relations, Environmental Leadership and Waste Management. Level 5 is the highest level and demonstrates excellence and leadership in the performance indicator.

For the 2024 program, participating ports were also required to report on efforts to improve the health of aquatic ecosystems in the port’s immediate and extended zones of influence. The Port was one of nine participating ports to achieve Level 5 in this new indicator.

More than 200 participants participated in the 2024 Green Marine certification program, including ship owners, ports, terminals and shipyards from around the world. Green Marine certificates were distributed earlier this month during GreenTech 2025 in New Orleans.
