October 1, 2026 — A long-envisioned ferry connection between Redwood City and the greater Bay Area is one step closer to reality with the release of the Draft EIR for the proposed Redwood City Ferry Terminal. The Draft EIR reflects years of planning and collaboration among the Port, City of Redwood City and San Francisco Bay Ferry.
The proposed service would connect Redwood City with San Francisco and Oakland, with ferries carrying up to 320 passengers and estimated travel times of about 61 minutes to San Francisco and 71 minutes to Oakland. The project also includes new public waterfront amenities such as an extension of the Bay Trail, bicycle and pedestrian connections, seating, restrooms and secure bike storage.
Beyond transportation, the project could strengthen regional emergency preparedness by expanding the Port’s role as a FEMA-designated Federal Staging Area. During a major disaster, the ferry system could help move first responders and critical supplies into affected areas and support evacuations if other transportation routes are disrupted. The project could also spur new waterfront activity, with future commercial, hospitality and recreational uses projected to support approximately 400 jobs.
Now is the time to weigh in. The Draft EIR is open for public review through 5 p.m. Nov. 2, and comments may be submitted by email, mail or hand delivery. The Port will also host a public meeting from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at 675 Seaport Blvd. in Redwood City.
